Whenever I’ve scoured the internet to find inspirational studio maternity boudoir photos, the examples I come across always seem to leave me feeling a little bit underwhelmed. You know what I mean? When you just can’t find what you’re looking for, yet you can’t seem to quite put your finger on the reason why…
But then again, I think as a Photo Artist, that’s a great spot to be in. Because I can create something meaningful to me, and to my clients, where there is a void. And maybe it resonates with others, too.
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, and if you can’t find what you’re looking for, then make it yourself.
That’s exactly what I did with this session, what my sweet client trusted me to create. I didn’t want an overly posed maternity session. I didn’t want her feeling like a show poodle. Nor did I want it to be overtly sexualized as many are, which I find to be a bit strange and off-putting, personally.
I wanted soft. I wanted to celebrate the ultimate femininity of pregnancy. To make it romantic and dreamy but also very simple and natural. Images that she won’t be embarrassed to show her grown children, but still showcase the beautiful curves and fullness of maternity motherhood.
Honestly, I truly love these images and I do think they fill a bit of a void that is within the Maternity Photography world, especially as it pertains to boudoir. In fact, I see the trend going this way over the next few years–I don’t think we’ll see quite as many maternity sessions “out in the wild”, particularly when the couple doesn’t have older children yet, but more in studio and in-home sessions. Cozy. Natural. Simple. Beautiful. All words that speak to my soul. I’m 100% okay with that.
What do you think?
This gorgeous gown is from DOEN, and I’m always adding beautiful, curated maternity and postpartum gowns and dresses to my client closet for sessions (just a little kiss from me to my clients, saving you money, time, and hassle as much as I can!).
