Portland, Oregon In-Home Newborn Photographer Emilie Phillipson Photography offers tips for making your newborn session easy, personal, and meaningful.
If you’re looking for newborn photos that are personal and meaningful, you’ve come to the right place!
I’m Emilie Phillipson and I specialize in Newborn Photography and cover all corners of the Portland Metro area from the outskirts of Tigard, the Eastside, and Vancouver. I think newborn sessions at home are the way to go, and my clients agree, let me tell you why!

1 – You just gave birth.
Leaving home in a hurry isn’t ideal. While I’m always impressed with the mamas who can get themselves ready, wrangle a newborn, older children, and a husband all out the door on time to a studio at 9am days after giving birth (and perhaps a major abdominal surgery), there’s nothing relaxing about that scenario.
Staying at home with your new baby and your family is much calmer. It flows. Let me come to you. I’ll even bring along a professional hair and makeup artist if you want. Have an outfit ready or have me curate a few options from my client closet. I am all about making this an easy and seamless process for you. You have enough on your hands: feeding your new baby around the clock, caring for your own postpartum body, crisis aversion with an adjusting toddler sibling… Let me get this part!

2 – Home is comfortable.
Your home is where your life *actually* happens. It’s your baby’s nursery. Your best snuggling sofa or chair. It’s where your boppy and pillows and washcloths and pump are. Not only your belongings, but the smells, sounds, and lighting of your own home are what baby is used to. Toddlers will also warm up to me much more quickly in an environment that is their own. With a Portland in-home photography session, you’re most likely to get the natural expressions and smiles you really want.
Plus, hello comfortable outfits! I love a good dress, but in-home photography lends itself to more casual attire so well. This goes for you, mama, but also for dad, baby, and older siblings. You get to wear clothing that you already have (or will wear again). I speak from experience when I say that this is a big plus for dad and kids!
I include a pretty good list of clothing inspiration for men, women, children, and babies in my In-home session prep guide. Two of my favorite shops for babies are Love’d Baby and Lou Lou and Co.
3 – Easier breaks for baby and siblings.
No matter where your newborn session is, I always let baby lead the way when breaks are needed. That doesn’t change. I’m just saying it’s much more comfortable for everyone, especially parents and siblings, when breaks can be at home. In your own space. No need to scramble for toddler snacks out of the diaper bag because you can just walk to the fridge. Need to grab a different bra or a comb? You’re not far away.
4 – Unique photos.
The easiest guarantee that your photos won’t look like anyone else’s. When you hire me as your Portland in-home newborn photographer, I’m planning poses and images around your specific home, not a generic studio. It’s your furniture, your walls, and your space that you lovingly pour into 365 days of the year. It’s going to be so much more personal and natural–no copy and paste photos here. Plus, when the weather is nice outside, we get to utilize your yard space, too, giving you a huge variety of indoor and outdoor photos!

5 – You can embrace imperfection at home.
The overall feel of an in-home session is casual. Don’t sweat the small stuff. I’m not coming over to see how Pinterest-y your kitchen is or estimate your last cleaning service. This is your home after all. Your home and your family are perfectly imperfect just as they are. When we do a session in your home, we embrace that mindset. I’ll direct and guide, but with a casual approach, and let moments unfold.
